One of the signature elements of the Trianon redevelopment will be its Woonerf, an active, shared street.
The woonerf is a type of street design that encourages multimodal transportation and blends pedestrian and vehicle space. The woonerf will anchor the boutique dining, retail, and other amenities, as part of the Trianon redevelopment.
Translated as “living street,” the woonerf employs strategies like traffic calming devices and low speed limits to have drivers safely share street space with pedestrians, cyclists, and others, in many cases without raised curbs that separate vehicles and pedestrians.
Traffic calming design, street furniture, bike infrastructure, and other elements are part of the woonerf design to make the street safer and more comfortable for all users. The woonerf street reimagines the space to encourage social interaction and the use of green spaces.
The concept was originally implemented in the Netherlands, born as a reaction to the car-centric development that began dominating American and European city planning in the mid-twentieth century.
The woonerf emphasizes the safety of all road users, along with activating community amenities.
